Office Coffee Dublin: Carbon Neutral Coffee
Coffee is one of the most consumed, most loved beverages in the world. From South America, to Asia, to your Dublin office, coffee drinking is a staple of modern life. A good cup of coffee can be the difference between a good or a bad morning, is the perfect refreshment, and drinking one is a great way of taking a break in the middle of the workday. However, we can’t merely regard coffee as a harmless treat. Like so much else in the twenty-first century, we have to think about it in terms of environmental sustainability. A couple of things about coffee make it a potential culprit in terms of carbon emissions:
- Coffee only grows in tropical climates. That means we need to ship it across great distances to bring it to Ireland. Shipping consumes energy and therefore has an environmental impact.
- Agriculture accounts for over 10% of global carbon emissions. Chemicals and pesticides that are used by farmers can have a damaging effect on the environment.
- Coffee plantations often encroach on protected landscapes such as rainforests. Unless we manage coffee production smartly, it will have a devastating impact on biodiversity.
Thankfully, there are ways that both consumers and businesses can help.
Supporting Sustainable Farming
Of all the emissions that the coffee sector creates, about 31% come from the farming and milling process. While it may seem as though there’s little we can do to mitigate this from our Dublin office, Cuco Coffee source our beans from Rainforest Alliance certified producers. This is one way we can support sustainable practices from afar. Here are some of the features of a Rainforest Alliance certified coffee farm:
- Farms must maintain at least 40% canopy coverage in order to prevent excessive deforestation.
- On average, at least 12 species of native tree must be present per hectare of cultivated land. This helps to maintain biodiversity.
- Farmers cannot alter natural water courses on their land.
These measures, in addition to others, help ensure that standards are maintained.
Reducing Emissions At The Point Of Consumption
You may be surprised to learn that 45% of the carbon emissions associated with coffee drinking are produced at the point of consumption. Almost half of the environmental impact of coffee drinking can be traced to our kitchens, offices and cafés. How can this be?
Firstly, many people drink their coffee with milk. The dairy industry has an outsized impact on the environment due to the carbon emissions produced by cattle farming. Funnily enough, there are a few ways that renting a Cuco Coffee machine can reduce your office’s dairy consumption. We put a lot of effort into crafting delicious blends of coffee beans, making black coffee all that more enticing. The machines also give you and your employees access to barista-style espressos. There are plenty of delicious, dairy-free options! Even the milky coffees from a Cuco machine use steamed, frothy milk which reduces the overall volume of milk used on top of adding to your coffee’s taste and texture.
Secondly, preparing coffee consumes energy. Kettles are notoriously energy-inefficient, and consume a surprisingly large chunk of power per use. This can contribute to rising energy bills (which is a particular concern these days) as well as your office’s carbon footprint. Drip coffee machines, another popular option, have their own drawbacks, particularly the heat plate which will draw power for hours on end as it keeps the pot of coffee warm. Although bean-to-cup machines consume their fair share of power, they are arguably more efficient. When you boil a kettle, do you use 100% of the water inside? How much coffee is wasted when an employee brews an entire pot? A bean-to-cup machine, as well as working faster, produces coffee on a cup-by-cup basis, so nothing goes to waste.
